If you prefer measurements in grams or ounces, this is for you. Whenever I find a cup measurement in a recipe, I keep asking, “just what cup size is this referring to?”
If you are often faced with the same dilemma, this should end the misery. We will be using the US cup as a reference for conversion.
Note that the number of ounces in a cup of dry and liquid food will differ. Simply put, 1 cup of dry food does not equal one cup of liquid. Let’s consider how they differ using different liquids, aqueous, and dry foods as examples.

In one cup of water, you have 8 fluid ounces, approximately 227 grams. It is best to measure liquid foods with liquid measuring cups because fluid ounces are more about measuring volume than weight. The cups often have measuring lines in both cups, ounces, and grams
How Many Ounces in A Quarter Cup of Water
A quarter is ¼ of a full cup. Since one cup of water is 8 ounces, divide it by 4 to get the value for a quarter cup. That will be 2 fluid ounces, approximately 57 grams.
How Many Ounces in A Cup of Coffee
Coffee is as fluid as water. Hence, they retain the same measurement. So in a cup of coffee, you also have 8 fluid ounces.
How Many Ounces in A Cup of Flour
Flour is dry food. As we mentioned earlier, its measurement will differ. In a cup of flour, there are 4¼ ounces of flour. For dry foods, you can use dry measuring cups or weigh them on a scale to get the correct measurement in ounces.
How Many Ounces in A Cup of Watermelon
Watermelon is essentially made up of water and carbs. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) says a cup of watermelon contains approximately 5 ounces of water. This refers to the amount of water in a cup of diced watermelons.
Healthline says that 2/3 cup of watermelon is equivalent to 100 grams. Hence, one cup of watermelon can be said to be 150 grams. In ounces, that is approximately 5.3 ounces. Therefore, the additional 0.3 ounces represents the carbs in one cup of watermelon.

How Many Ounces in A Cup of Butter
One cup of butter equals 8 ounces, which is approximately 227 grams. So, in measuring, weigh a block of butter. It might seem small to the eye, but it’s just fine in weight.
How Many Ounces in A Cup of Butternut Squash
According to Healthline, one cup of cooked butternut squash is equivalent to 205 grams, which is about 7.23 ounces. One cup of raw butternut squash, though, weighs approximately 10.7 ounces.
How Many Ounces of Water in A 12-Cup Coffee Maker
Although one cup of water weighs 8 fluid ounces, the coffee pot cups in coffee makers can take about 5 fluid ounces of liquid each. Therefore, 12 cups multiplied by 5 ounces of liquid each gives us 60 ounces. So, a 12-cup coffee maker will take 60 ounces of water, not 96.

How Many Ounces of Water Go in A Cup of Noodles
For this, there is no standard. Some recommend 10 or 11 ounces, but it’s best to stick to the instructions on the pack telling you to fill it with hot water up to the fill line.
If you want to experiment, you can try adding varying ounces of water to different cups of noodles and taste to see which gives you the best effect.
Generally, four ounces equal half a cup. This is especially so for liquid foods. But as we have seen in the case of shredded cheese, 4oz actually equals 1 cup. For dry foods of different types, their cup measurements differ in ounces.
8 fluid ounces is the same as one cup for liquid foods, whether it is water, cooking oil, or coffee. But the same cannot be said for dry foods, as you would have observed from prior questions.
Dry foods or ingredients vary greatly in weight, so 8oz is not necessarily the same as one cup.

One US cup of long white rice equals 6.53 ounces. This applies only to uncooked rice.
Some kinds of peanut butter are lighter than others, but generally, one cup of peanut butter equals 8 to 9 ounces.
When measuring semi-hard cheese, it is generally accepted that 4 ounces yield one cup of shredded cheese. So, 8 ounces of shredded cheese will yield two cups, not one.
